Summary of the Oct 2010 Bon Beer Voyage Belgium Beercation

 Day 3 Monday October 25th            (Sailing from Bruges to Ghent)

Our Barge, The Iris

 This morning we had the pleasure of a relaxed breakfast while being able to enjoy the scenery as the barge sailed slowly from Bruges to Ghent through the canal.   We played a few rounds Beer Cap Bingo for some cool prizes.

After another gourmet lunch on the barge we met up with a much smaller canal boat for an informative tour of the historic city of Ghent from the water.

After the canal boat tour we all decided to fortify ourselves with a beer before we headed over to see the “torture” devices at the Gravensteen Castle (now a torture museum). 

Café ‘t Galgenhuis

We headed to the smallest bar in Ghent, Café ‘t Galgenhuis, which is an old “hangman’s”  or gallows house turned into a bar. 

 Here we tried 4 different beers from the same brewery Brouwerij Haacht NV.:

Haacht Wit Bier (Excelsior)- a Witbier of 4.8% abv,

Tongerlo Bruin– a 6.0% abv Belgian Dark Ale and

both the Charles Quint (aka Keizer Karel) Blond and Bruin.  The Blond is a Belgian Strong Pale Ale at 8.5% abv and the Bruin was a Belgian Strong Dark Ale of 9.0% abv.

After our visit through the Gravensteen Castle and seeing all the medieval torture devices we could stand, it was time to calm our tortured nerves with another beer. 

 Our closest stop was ‘t Waterhuis aan de Bierkant.  This canal side gem has a beer list of over 150 beers.

Rochefort 10, a Quadrupel with an abv of 11.30% brewed at the Brasserie de Rochefort  and the House Beer Mammelokker, a 6.0% Bruin.

After our visit to the Waterhuis we walked next door to sample some of the 200 types of jenever at ’t Dreupelkot.

 At ‘t Dreupelkot we were greeted by Pol, a Santa Claus looking character.  We tried the vanilla, the chocolate, the banana and various mixtures of these before we convinced the new jenever junkies in our group to leave the bar!

 After our jenever experience, we took a short walk to De Dulle Griet.

After we all saw the cannon we went to the “other” Dulle Griet.  

 

De Dulle Griet

Dulle Griet has over 250 different bottle beers on their menu.  Their specialty is their famous “The Max”, which is Kwak from Brouwerij Bosteels poured into a Kwak Yard Glass.   As you may know, these glasses are not cheap, so in order to deter sticky fingered visitors from making them into souvenirs, patrons ordering “The Max” must take off one of their shoes as collateral.  The shoes is then put into a basket and hoisted to the ceiling by a pulley system.  When the glass is returned, so is the shoe! This bar can get crowded, so as a courtesy to your fellow imbibers, if you plan to have a Kwak, wear your odor eaters, please!

Afterward we stopped by a nearby bottle shop where a few of us to the opportunity to do a little beer hunting & gathered up few bottle to bring back to the barge as well as back home.

Dinner tonight on the barge was spectacular, we had salmon…

 Next up is Day 4. We will visit 3 breweries then meet our Barge, the Iris, in Bassrode where we will spend the night before heading to Antwerp and Brussels.

How served: 22 oz capped bottle poured into a 3 Fonteinen Tumbler.

My Overall Opinion:  Good.

I paired this beer with: Bar-B-Que chicken.  Nice pairing!

Tasted on:  Tuesday February 7th, 2011  

Note:  This beer poured an opaque light red with a 1 finger fluffy white head leaving a minimal lacing on the glass.   The nose was of sweet cherries and oak.  The initial taste was of sweet hard cherry candy, some oak and finished with mild cherry tartness.   The mouthfeel was thin with a medium level of carbonation.   The drinkability was good with no notice of the 8% abv.  I felt like I was drinking a cherry soda rather than a Kriek Lambic.   This is one beer I would not be buying again anytime soon, as there are many other Krieks I have enjoyed and would rather have.  

On the Label:  45% ale with cherries added, 55% ale.  New Belgium ale blended with Brouwerij Frank Boon lambic with real cherries.  Travel to NewBelgium.com/TK

 From their websiteIn a never-ending quest to create new beers and defy category, New Belgium Brewing and Brewerij Boon of Belgium have partnered together again to create Transatlantique Kriek – a spontaneously fermented lambic ale made with Polish cherries.

This authentic kriek beer began life in the oaken vessels at Frank Boon’s brewery in the Lembeek region of Belgium.  After more than two years aging, Boon’s offering shipped across the Atlantic and found its way to the intuitive palate of New Belgium’s Brewmaster Peter Bouckaert.  After much sampling and internal consultation, Peter and his brew staff created a full-bodied golden lager to round out the light-bodied kriek.

 The cherry nose gives way to a pleasingly sour flash across the palate that rolls gently into a slightly sweet finish.  Crisp, effervescent carbonation keeps the mouthfeel bright and delightfully tingly.

 This was the 3rd annual Jupiter Field of Beers and I was fortunate enough to be at all 3 events.  Like the last 2 years, Fran, from Brewzzi, did an outstanding job of putting together this event.  I’m already looking forward to next years!

 This year there were 16 mouthwatering food and beer pairing stations.  2 were alongside 1st base & 3rd base; 3 were found inside each dugout where you could eat and drink while sitting on the dugout benches and the other 6 were scattered along the backstop behind home plate.

American take on a traditional Belgian classic. Full-bodied, slightly tart Brown Ale well balanced with fresh American hops.

“At Brewzzi, our beer’s journey doesn’t end at the bottom of the glass.  The spent grain from our brewery goes to a Loxahatchee company which uses it to make organic worm castings…yes, worm poop.  The result is an all natural, 100 percent organic fertilizer which is then sent to an organic farm to help grow vegetables we intended to use in tonight’s beer and food pairings. 

But mother nature had other plans. Two months ago, the frost and freezing temperatures ruined a large percentage of crops throughout South Florida, including our veggies.  So, while we were unable to use sustainable vegetables this time around, we promise to try again next year.

When they say “grain fed beef” they meant “beer grain feed”!!  “Big Bear brewmaster Matt Cox contributed to both the beer and food in tonight’s pairing.  Matt donates his spent grain to a local cattle farmer in Delray Beach, who has been feeding it to his cows since last year.  The resulting beef is part of this pairing tonight.  It’s a great example of how craft beer and sustainability can go hand in hand.”
