Beer #141 Ølfabrikken Porter

Ølfabrikken Porter

Name: Ølfabrikken Porter

Style: Baltic Porter

Brewery: Ølfabrikken website.

Country:  Denmark

Region:  Roskilde

ABV: 7.5% Abv

How served: 22.3oz capped bomber poured a Bush chalice.

My Overall Opinion: Amazing.

I paired this beer with: Nothing today.

Tasted on:  Thursday September 23rd, 2010

Note:  This beer poured a very dark brown almost black with a thin dark tan head which dissipated very quickly.  The nose was sweet & smoky with hints of dark cocoa and coffee.  The taste was coffee, dark chocolate, smoke, molasses and brown sugar, but not too sweet as it finished with some bitterness.  The mouthfeel was smooth, creamy & with a medium to full body.  The drinkability was excellent and leaves you wanting more.

Look it even comes in a can too:

Ølfabrikken Porter can

On the Label:  Ølfabrikken (The Beer Factory) is an experimental brewery on the vibrant Danish beer scene.  oUr beers are unpasteurized and unfiltered, and are naturally carbonated (without added CO2) for maximum flavor, aroma, and mouth feel.

Our Porter is inspired by the weighty Baltic porters common in Scandinavia.  The taste is slightly smoky, with vinous notes from brown sugar, leading to a long, rich finish dominated by chocolate, licorice, and coffee flavors from our special blend of roasted malts.  Enjoy at 50-55° F in a tulip or tumbler glass.

From their website:  Ølfabrikken Porter (7,5 %)
A dark and rich porter inspired by the Baltic porters traditionally made in Scandinavia. Roasted without being burned or bitter, with the flavor dominated by dried fruits and vinous notes. High amounts of residual sugars and a fruity aroma makes this beer the perfect companion for chocolate desserts, if served lightly chilled. Brewed on Maris Otter ale malt, British Brown Malt, chocolate malt, roasted barley, two types of caramel malt and brown sugar.
Was in 2006 awarded Beer News of the Year (by Danish Beer Enthusiast) and Best Porter in the world (at Ratebeer.com)

Summer Beer Tasting: 21 different styles in 26 Beers

My friend Stu returned from California with a nice haul of “West Coast” beers not available in S. Florida.   His philosophy is that good beer is meant to be shared, so he invited a small handful of friends to his backyard for a great beer tasting on Saturday.

The Beer "Waiting Room"

Above is what I called the Beer “Waiting Room”.  This is a photo before more beer was added as guests arrived.

I have listed the beers in the Order we drank them.  Our method of picking our next beer was very random.  We would just go to the beer “Waiting Room” stick in our hand and pull out a beer, most of the time not knowing what we were going to pull out.  It actually worked out quite well this way, as you will see the styles did vary and kept palate fatigue at bay.  We were able to taste 21 different beers style from the 26 beers we had.

Stu and the cheese spread as he finished pouring our 1st brew.

Beer #112 Victory Baltic Thunder

Victory Baltic Thunder

Name: Baltic Thunder

Style:  Baltic Porter

Brewery: Victory Brewing Company website

Country: USA

Region: Downingtown, Pennsylvania

ABV: 8.5% Abv

How served: 22oz capped bomber poured into a Brigand chalice.

My Overall Opinion: Very Good

I paired this beer with: Leftover thick tomato based vegetable soup with shrimp and fish added.  The mild chocolate taste in this baltic porter clashed with the tomato in the soup.   Next time I’ll stay with an IPA.

Tasted on:  Thursday May 20th, 2010.

Note:  The first thing which hits you with this beer are hints of chocolate, toffee and the sweetness of the malt.  There is no way that you would think this was 8.5% abv, as it drinks more like a 5%er.  This was a very enjoyable brew, just wish I paired it with desert instead.

On the Label:   Enjoy by Jan 27, 2011 otherwise the same as “About” below.

From their website:

ABOUT  Truly a worldly beer. Baltic Thunder represents the Baltic Porter style admirably. Exhibiting the enticing, toffee roast of the British porter that originated the style in the 18th century, and the soothing, subtle fruit nuance of contemporary brews that flourish from Helsinki to Vilnius today, this dark lager honors the Baltic god of thunder.  Created by an inspired collaboration of brewers and tempered with a touch of turmoil, Baltic Thunder rolls on to bring you enchanting light as the darkness fades.

COMPOSITION
Hops: European whole flower
Malts: imported German 2 row and roasted malts
ABV: 8.5%

Beer #58 Ølfabrikken Winter Porter

Ølfabrikken Winter Porter

Name:

 Ølfabrikken Winter Porter

Style:   Baltic Porter

Brewery: Ølfabrikken website

Country: Denmark

Region:  Roskilde

ABV: 11.00%

How served: 750ml Corked & caged bottle poured into a Delirium Tremens glass.

My Overall Opinion: Very Good.

I paired this beer with: A Cuban sandwich made with pork and ham smoked in the back yard.

Tasted on: Sunday December 20, 2009.

Note:  This was a very pleasant surprise. This was a thick and chewy beer which paired great with this smoked Cuban sandwich.

From their website: Bottom fermented porter made with Danish honey and matured for four months before bottling.

This is the 25th of my daily Christmas beer, on my quest for a Christmas beer a day from Thanksgiving to Christmas.  There are now only 4 more beers until Christmas!
