Summer Beer Tasting: 21 different styles in 26 Beers

My friend Stu returned from California with a nice haul of “West Coast” beers not available in S. Florida.   His philosophy is that good beer is meant to be shared, so he invited a small handful of friends to his backyard for a great beer tasting on Saturday.  

The Beer "Waiting Room"

Above is what I called the Beer “Waiting Room”.  This is a photo before more beer was added as guests arrived. 

I have listed the beers in the Order we drank them.  Our method of picking our next beer was very random.  We would just go to the beer “Waiting Room” stick in our hand and pull out a beer, most of the time not knowing what we were going to pull out.  It actually worked out quite well this way, as you will see the styles did vary and kept palate fatigue at bay.  We were able to taste 21 different beers style from the 26 beers we had.

How served: 500ml capped bottle poured into a Chimay glass.    

My Overall Opinion: Good

I paired this beer with: nothing.

Tasted on: Friday December 11, 2009.

Note:   Ridgeway has a line of Christmas themed beers, such as: Bad Elf, Criminally Bad Elf, Insanely Bad Elf, Very Bad Elf, Seriously Bad Elf, Lump of Coal, Pickled Santa, Reindeer Droppings & Reindeer’s Revolt.

 From their website:  They said it couldn’t be done, but we did it: Santa’s Butt, the beer, coming to a theater near you for the holidays. It’s a splendid, satisfying Winter Porter at 6% — a souped-up version of the classic Entire Butt Porter that you’ve enjoyed in the past. Everyone wants a piece of Santa’s Butt.

This special porter is made for winter — rich and warming, the way they like it in the North Pole. It was inspired by this famous line from a well-loved children’s story book:

“And Santa sat on his great butt, drinking a hearty brew.”

In case you find that amusing, we hasten to point out that in England ‘butt’ refers to a certain barrel used in brewing — a very large barrel, in fact, holding 108 imperial gallons. Back in the day it was quite a normal thing for a brewery to put its beer up in a large butt for storage.

Still snickering, eh? Get your mind out of the gutter or Santa will skip your house entirely this year.

The illustration for the Santa’s Butt label was painted by Massachusetts artist Gary Lippincott. Go to his web site and buy something for chrissakes. The poor guy works for beer.

How served: 500ml capped bottle poured into a Troubadour glass.     

My Overall Opinion: Very Good

I paired this beer with: my favorite thing to pair with beer, Assortment of cheeses and hard sausage.   

Tasted on: Wednesday December 02, 2009

Note: Wow, I really liked this beer.  It is not the best in the world, I know I have had better x-mas/winter brew, but this is a very good x-mas beer.  I say stock up on this one.

 This is the 7th of my daily Christmas/Winter beers which I will be having until Christmas.  There are now only 22 more beers until Christmas!

 “The name Nøgne Ø means “naked island”, a poetic term used by Henrik Ibsen to describe any of the countless stark, barren outcroppings that are visible in the rough seas off Norway’s southern coast, where the brewery sits.  The founders gave Nøgne Ø a subtitle- “ The Uncompromising Brewery” – a plain statement of their mission to make ales of personality and individuality Brewing in traditional styles, but thoroughly inspired by the boldness of American brewing these Norwegian brewers fearlessly chart their own course.”

 From their website: GOD JUL  19°P, 30 IBU, 8.5 % ALC/VOL

A dark ale brewed specially for the Christmas season, with a rich, complex taste of caramel. This is a strong, dark and rather sweet Christmas Beer – just the way we think a Christmas beer should be. 

Recommended serving temperature 12°C/53°F.  Great with cheese or nuts. 

 Ingredients:Lager, Munich, caramel, black, and chocolate malt; Chinook, Columbus, and Centennial hops; English ale yeast, and our local Grimstad water.
