How served:  22 oz waxed and capped bottle poured into a Delirium Noël snifter to get me into the holiday mood.       

My Overall Opinion: Amazing. 

I paired this beer with:   Lobster raviolis with marinara sauce.  Not the best choice of beer to go with this lobster ravioli, but what the heck, life is short and drink what you want, when you want it.  Overall nothing clashed and meal & beer was very enjoyable… mission accomplished!

Notes:  This is a Special batch of their seasonal winter brew Jubelale. 

 The beer poured a muddy deep brown with a thin dark tan head which left a thin and sticky lacing on my glass.     

 The nose had nice aromas of toffee, chocolate, plums, roasted malt, hints of vanilla and a very pleasant warmth from the alcohol.

 The taste is similar to the nose.  I got chocolate, toffee and sweet roasted malts up front, then the vanilla, dark fruits and some bourbon flavors snuck in midway, and the beer finished dry with a very pleasant warmth from the alcohol.   

The body with medium to moderate with a slick/creamy mouthfeel with a very nice warmth from the alcohol.

The drinkability was good, but one which you would like to sip and savor.  This beer improved greatly as it warmed up and was good to the last drop.  Wait only 9 more years & look for the 2020 at a bottle shop near you.

My Overall Opinion:  Amazing 

I paired this beer with: Game 5 of the Heat vs Sixers playoff game.

Tasted on:  Wednesday April 27th, 2011  

Notes:  This is a 2009 vintage.  There have been many claims that some of the 2009 bottles of The Abyss are infected, so I am holding my breath that this is not one of them.  I last tried this vintage in Dec 2009 when it was “fresh” and there were no signs of infection at that time.  However, this is a different bottle and has aged at least 16 months, which could have given any nasty bugs time to do their dirty work.

So here it goes.

As I removed the cap I heard a faint hiss.  So far no signs or scents of an infected brew.

 The beer poured a very dark deep brown to midnight black with a 2 finger dark tan head which dissipated by the time I was half way thru my glass and left a minimal lacing on the glass, so far no odd smells.  After taking a deep whiff from my glass I’m sure this in not infected as all I got from the nose was bourbon, chocolate, molasses, vanilla and some coffee.  The taste was like the nose,  I got bitter chocolate, molasses, mild bourbon notes and vanilla plus I was able to pick up some of the black licorice flavor which I love.  The beer had a medium to thick slick mouthfeel with a nice carbonation level.   The drinkability of this 11% abv brew was very good with minimal heat from the alcohol.  I’m glad I got a “good” bottle, now I have to hope my others are good too.  I’m looking forward to doing a vertical tasting in 2013, as I have the ’06, ’07, ’08 & ’09, now all I need is the ’10, ’11.,’12 & ’13!

On the Label:  Best after 11/1/10. The Abyss: Stout brewed with licorice and molasses with 33% aged in oak and oak bourbon barrels. It’s dark. It’s deep.  It’s mysterious.  This imperial stout has immeasurable depth inviting you to explore and discover its rich complex profile.  The flavor of this special brew draws you in further and further with each sip.  The Abyss beckons.  Enjoy the journey.

Summer Beer Tasting: 21 different styles in 26 Beers

My friend Stu returned from California with a nice haul of “West Coast” beers not available in S. Florida.   His philosophy is that good beer is meant to be shared, so he invited a small handful of friends to his backyard for a great beer tasting on Saturday.  

The Beer "Waiting Room"

Above is what I called the Beer “Waiting Room”.  This is a photo before more beer was added as guests arrived. 

I have listed the beers in the Order we drank them.  Our method of picking our next beer was very random.  We would just go to the beer “Waiting Room” stick in our hand and pull out a beer, most of the time not knowing what we were going to pull out.  It actually worked out quite well this way, as you will see the styles did vary and kept palate fatigue at bay.  We were able to taste 21 different beers style from the 26 beers we had.

Beer # 129 Deschutes Hop in the Dark C.D.A.

It has been a few weeks since I last posted to my blog.  I was away on vacation with visits to Italy, Croatia, Greece, Turkey and to England.  Even though I did not set out to do a lot of beer hunting, I did get a chance to drink some local brews in each country and will share some of the unique beers I’ve had in a future blog including some very good “Real” Craft Beer in Greece.  


Deschutes Hop in the Dark C.D.A.

Name:  Hop in the Dark C.D.A. (Cascadian Dark Ale)

Style:  Black IPA  (Cascadian Dark Ale)

Region:  Bend, Oregon

ABV: 6.50% Abv

How served: 22oz bomber poured into a La Chouffe tulip.         

My Overall Opinion: Very Good.

I paired this beer with: A homemade Greek salad sans lettuce and broiled chicken. This is a strange pairing as the roasted malts and the feta cheese did clash a bit.  Next time I’ll make it an IPA.

Tasted on:  Monday July 12th, 2010. 

Note:  The beer poured with a fluffy 2 finger dark tan head.  The smell was a mixture of smoke and chocolate from the roasted malt and spicy citrus from the hops, with the nose from the hops winning out.   The initial taste of this beer was of roasted coffee and chocolate with a hint of a smoked flavor, then mid way through to the finish it is all hops.  The hops where both piney and grapefruity.   The mouthfeel was of a medium texture and had a nice level of carbonation. This is a very drinkable and refreshing brew.

On the Label:  From the nothing’s sacred Pacific Northwest comes a whole new beer style: Cascadian Dark Ale.  Welcome to the curious place where the velvet dark of roasted malt meets the hop snap of IPA. Cheers.

Can an IPA be black?  Semantics aside, this noir version adds deep roasted malts to alter the hue and slightly smooth the edges.  What emerges is something deeper, less orthodox, and all its own.

My Overall Opinion: Very Good.

I paired this beer with: Grilled and smoked turkey burgers topped with Habanero pepper sauce and corn on the cob.

Tasted on:  Wednesday April 14th, 2010. 

Note:  Best by Date: 04/16/10, whew, I made it by 2 days.  This beer paired better with this same meal then yesterdays, Bière de Mars.  This IPA cut thru the heat of the hot sauce better.   This beer is listed as an Imperial IPA, but to me drinks and smelled more like an IPA, a good hoppy one at that.   If it wasn’t for the 8.75% abv this would be a fantastic brew for a session, & I would be careful if you choose to do so.  Overall I was very pleased with this beer, too bad it is not sold in Florida, at least not yet.

On the Label:  Stonehenge is a mystery. Hop Henge is a discovery.  Our Monument to hops- Hop Henge is brought to life by the uncompromising creativity of our brewers.  With an immense hop flavor and bitter finish.  This experimental IPA will stand the test of time.   95 IBU’s.

Hop Henge started its life as an India Pale Ale, but this year it was bumped up to “Imperial IPA” status, with a hefty dose of additional hops.
“This one is lovely,” said taster Tom Conti. “They got it just right.”
It pours out a deep amber, with an appealing rocky head, and rich hop aroma wafting from the glass. “They sure dosed it with a lot of hops…[there’s] a lot of hop bitterness in the taste,” one taster observed.
In addition to the Imperial-level hopping, Hop Henge also boasts Imperial-level alcohol content, with 8.1% a.b.v.
This was the top-rated beer during its tasting session, and tasters had to dig deep for new superlatives to describe it. “This is a beautiful beer,” concluded taster Gregg Glaser. “Full of flavor and hops and malt and hops again.”
“Not for the timid,” said taster Robert Lachman.

 This is the 4th of my daily Christmas/Winter beers which I will be having until Christmas.  There are only 25 more beers until Christmas!

Note: On the bottle it is suggested that it is best to consume after 10/17/2010.  So I cheated and had it a year too soon.  Now I can’t wait until next year to try my others to see how well it will do as it ages.  Wow can’t believe it will get better than this. Great after dinner or dessert brew.
